'Starship Troopers' Reboot: With Less Violence

Though the planned reboot of Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 original film, Starship Troopers, will pull back  violence in the film, according to producer Toby Jaffe, the positive news is that the film is still pressing ahead.

In a recent interview with Empire, Toby Jaffe stated, "The more expensive a film is, the harder it is now to make it that violent," With Recall in particular, we made a conscious choice to keep it tonally closer to something like Minority Report. It gives the studio, and us as producers, the opportunity to reintroduce it in a new way."

Jaffe who is also producing the upcoming summer movie Total Recall remake told Empire that the new version of Starship Troopers will stick more closely to the original content from Robert Heinlein’s 1959 novel.

"Verhoeven made his movie a critique of fascism," says Jaffe, "whereas Heinlein was writing from the perspective of someone who had served in World War II. Y'know, one man's fascism is another man's patriotism..."

With that being said, another advancement to the film is the use of more visual effects which will make it easier to bring in more futuristic elements. Even though the film is probably headed towards a PG-13 rating, which understandably can aim towards a broader audience, you also have to keep in mind that it can also separate us true fans from the reboot, remembering such an awesome film! But until then, we'll keep you posted with future information and hope we end up getting a nice surprise.
